The National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed that about K444 million at embassies and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation was paid into personal accounts, with intent to defraud the Malawi Government.

NAO has shown in its 2017/18 financial year, that fake remittance advises were emailed to the embassy by the senior accounts clerk. The audit report says that payments were made through cheques disguised as rentals, shipments of goods for recalled diplomats and advances.

The report concludes that concluded that audit committees in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) must be strengthened to facilitate speedy responses to audit reports
